Lord of Snakes by John Rovito

Post by Lester Curtis »

Sci-fi meets mythology in this post-apocalyptic tale. I like the writing style; Mr. Rovito has a nice touch with descriptive prose, and the action is gritty and grim. The Good Guys prevail in a nasty battle, but their success is rendered futile.

A good story with an unhappy and uncertain ending. Lots of missing commas, though; Mr. Rovito needs to order replacements, as he's obviously run low on his supply of them.
I was raised by humans. What's your excuse?

Some of the omitted commas (if not all) were a deliberate choice by the author -- he undid a few of my insertions. I think the intended effect is to emphasize the unrestricted rush of ideas and images by eliminating the pauses implied by separating listed items with commas -- the reader is to feel overwhelmed by the pace of things (and when the things are cities falling before the new / old gods' armies, 'overwhemed' is probably the appropriate way to feel).
You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.

I wondered if that wasn't the case, and it did have that effect. It just seemed to work better in some instances than others.
