This is a short trip through a portal, okay? The reality on the other side is consistent, but it's not necessarily supposed to make sense to you.
There. Now that I've got that out of the way, one little quibble: The PoV changes were a little rough. It might have been better if you stayed in one character's head the whole time.
Good job with characterization and dialog. Setting ... glad I don't live there. Plot--umm, partial? Lots of the backstory is missing, but that doesn't hurt the story.
