Very nice. Subtle, complex, and well worth a second read. I assume from the other comments here that Orion's Arm is a shared universe? This tale gave many inidcations of being part of a greater whole - something even more commendable if this is a stand-alone story. I enjoyed this immensely.

I THINK I included a link to the thingy in the bio paragraph ... but it probably links to the website of a pornographic pyramid sales scheme, with my luck. My impression is that it's an online game, a multiplayer environment without the high-end (or indeed any?) graphics, for which Ms Goodman has contributed much of the broad background as well as a lot of the details of the universe and some major characters. (Or am I thinking of something else? I may be suffering from an Editor Moment here (like a 'senior moment', but relating specifically to things encountered whilst editing.))

What babe?

The babe with the power.

What power?

The power of voodoo.

-- davjonz
Actually, I think it's "The power of hoodoo."

That leads into the exchange that turns the sequence into a loop:

"Hoodoo?"

"You do."

"Do what?"

"You remind me of a man."

"What man?"

"The man with the power."

I think this is an old vaudeville routine (kind of a lesser cousin to "Who's on first?"); it was quoted as the opening to the novel, "The Power" by Frank M. Robinson (originally set in the 50's; an updated version was released in 2000; a movie version starring George Hamilton(!) and Michael Rennie was released in 1968).

jaimie, the only one with multiple personalities here is Rob, and they're all verbose. Irritable bowel torpedo...what?!

but yes, a very good story. i found it a challenge, which is a boon.
