'Basements' by Rob Garza

Post by Megawatts »

A story with depth. Rob uses many techniques to gives us a three-dimensional
understanding of George and Irene. 'generic Frosted Flakes--the kind that came in a box with a laughing ape instead of a laughing tiger.' Nice! A father who is worthless!!

George and Irene are trapped in a Web, and the symbolism of the spiders is understood.

The fight on the school bus, and the sexual overtones, all add to the story of George, for   kids do act that way on a school bus.

George and Irene’s father cares nothing for them. His main ambition in life is the Mexican girls, and rum.

I ’m sure George and Irene long for their mother, and the story does emphasize that point but very delicately. Their mother didn’t fight, instead took everything that their dad dished out.

The kids are tapped in a Web of  decadence spun by their father and nourished by his continual debauchery, and his disregard for their well-being. So many kid are around the whole could be in this story!!

A good read and a fine theme.
