Personally, I thought that the narrator was just a man with a dismal life (physical challenges, domestic drudgery) and a vivid imagination that allowed him to "time travel". The Civil War milieu, while it carried the certainty of discomfort and the likelihood of pain and death, was at least more INTERESTING to him than his real life.
