For a not-funny-at-all extreme take on how bad bread-and-circuses 'reality' TV COULD get, viz. David Cronenberg's 'Videodrome' (which had fun stuff like live torture and executions BEFORE the reality-warping stuff started). One of the gimmicks of 'Survivor' in its various incarnations is that the contestants never know exactly what the starting conditions will be in terms of the resources they will have to work with. In this case, the producers pulled a double whammy -- providing only the ILLUSION of fulfilling the contestant's dream, and then dosing him with psychotropic drugs so that the viewers could be entertained by the gradual disintegration of his mind.

A number of shows now on the air or recently aired depend on the premise that the participants DO NOT KNOW what the situation really is ("Joe Millionaire" or whatever it was called, with women competing for the affections of a supposedly wealthy man being a stark example). So ...
