The punchline to which part?

The first part shows Dubya so strenuously denying any link to Enron CEO Ken Lay (one of his major fundraising stalwarts) that he pretends not to know his own wife's name. Of course, with Dubya, it's POSSIBLE that he doesn't know his own wife's name without Dick Cheney's hand stuck up his jacket ... the resemblance to a ventriloquist's dummy may not be entirely an accident.

The second part has Elephant expecting Donkey to be proposing a new $10 bill honoring Ronald Reagan, not some black musician ...

Okay, the third and fourth parts are a little obscure (or not that funny, or too true to be funny?)

Robert M.

I think it's a Bushism, or one of those phrases that shows up BY SHEER COINCIDENCE in the public statements of multiple Republican Party/White House mouthpieces (viz. 'we would have moved Heaven and Earth to (prevent 9/11) if we had specific information ...' -- the same phrase or close variants showed up in speeches by just about every Republican over the course of a few days.) The Daily Show (Jon Stewarts's news satire) likes to string clips together demonstrating the prepackaged nature of these speeches.

This particular Bushism (come to think of it, I think it's from a Bush speech, or several Bush speeches) is funny in a sad sort of way because it's like the (before your time) cosmetic or hair coloring commercial where a model/actress says 'Don't hate me because I'm beautiful'. A comedian (Brett Butler) replied, 'Oh, honey, there's so many other good reasons.' Like, invading countries whenever you feel like it, bombing civilians, imprisoning anybody who even looks like an Arab without due process, ...

That's my take on it, anyway. Cary? What DID that one mean?

Robert M.

A Great New 'Bushism' (from CNN.com)

Bush misspeaks during signing ceremony
McClellan: 'This president speaks with clarity and conviction'

Thursday, August 5, 2004 Posted: 2:19 PM EDT (1819 GMT)

President Bush makes remarks Thursday at a signing ceremony for the Department of Defense's 2005 Appropriations Act.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush offered up a new entry for his catalog of "Bushisms" on Thursday, declaring that his administration will "never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people."

Bush misspoke as he delivered a speech at the signing ceremony for a $417 billion defense spending bill.

"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we," Bush said.

"They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we."

No one in Bush's audience of military brass or Pentagon chiefs reacted.

The president was working his way toward a larger point. We must always be forward-thinking," he said.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said Bush's misstatement "just shows even the most straightforward and plain-spoken people misspeak."

"But the American people know this president speaks with clarity and conviction, and the terrorists know by his actions he means it," McClellan said.

******
So -- was that a Freudian slip, revealing Dubya's true intentions?
