I think the story depicted a world where people voluntarily had their bodies placed in life-support cradles (which apparently did a lousy job of maintenance in terms of preventing atrophy) so they could game in virtual worlds continuously. The malfunctions indicated that a virus had infiltrated the operating environment, changing the rules of the games and affecting the life-support software as well -- fatal for the withered remnants of the players' real bodies.
Better make sure you include some "Wii Fit" time in your gaming schedule...
