Very reminiscent of a Twilight Zone or Outer Limits (the 1990s versions) episode, but 'grittier' than either. For anyone who has ever felt that the people in authority were soulless machines, this story gives the answer to the question "what if you were right?"
The ironic aspect of the story is that the other inmates are as cruel as the jailers -- and for entirely mistaken reasons. Poor Prisoner 87...
